We are hiring for two positions, a full-time seasonal Flower Farmer and for a seasonal Farm Crew Member position; descriptions below.

FLOWER FARMER
Full-Time Seasonal Position April - October

Flora Flowers, the cut flower enterprise of Shekomeko Farms, is seeking a seasonal flower farmer for the 2018 growing season. We are looking for a self-motivated individual to join our farm team who is passionate about learning small scale, diversified cut-flower production. Areas of work and responsibility will primarily be in field production and direct sales. We sell market-style bouquets and while the position does include bouquet-making, this is not a design-focused position. There is potential for the expansion of our design division in future seasons. Field work varies by the season; in the spring and early summer, there is an emphasis on bed prep, transplanting, trellising, and laying drip irrigation. Summer brings a lot of weeding, harvesting, pest management, and dead-heading. In the fall we plant all of our spring bulbs and early flowers, dig and store dahlia tubers,  and clean up the field (removing drip tape, landscape fabric, netting, etc.) We sell to a few retail outlets locally, and our primary sales are at the Union Square Greenmarket May - October.

We are a returning crew of five working on various enterprises on the farm, and are looking for someone who will fit well with our existing crew. Positive attitude, a sense of humor and a willingness to pivot and go with the flow are essential qualities for an enjoyable season. Prior experience with farm work is desirable. We have found that experience in the service industry and competitive sports teams often translate well to farm work.

We need someone who:

Can  lift and carry 50 lbs
Has reliable transportation to and from the farm,
as well as workwear for all seasons.
Can be available to work alternating weekends for markets and farm chores
Can work markets sometimes on Saturdays
Is willing and able to drive a large sprinter van in Manhattan

Qualifications that are not required, but are helpful, include:

Experience with cut flower production and /or floral design
Experience with farmer’s markets

Work is seasonal, full time from April through October, with longer work hours in the high season. Pay is $13-$15/hour depending on experience.  Weekly hours in the height of the summer tend to be around 50 hours/week. We are looking for someone who can commit to the entire season; if you are only available for a shorter amount of time please consider our farm crew position below.

FARM CREW MEMBER

Areas of work and responsibility will primarily be in field production which includes propagation, transplanting, weeding, trellising, dead-heading,  harvesting, packing/washing, and help with production of market bouquets. We sell to a few retail outlets locally, and our primary sales are at the Union Square Greenmarket May - October and other outlets in New York City.
